What to include in a first enquiry
You do not need to prepare a formal brief. The following is usually enough for us to tell you whether an investigation is worthwhile and roughly what it would involve:
- What the component is, and what it does.
- The material grade, and the material certificate if you have it.
- How long it was in service before the problem appeared.
- The service environment: fluid, temperature, chloride content, pH, flow, and anything unusual that happened.
- Photographs, including one that shows the component in its installed context.
Before you clean anything. Corrosion products, deposits and fracture surfaces carry most of the evidence. Wire-brushing or degreasing a failed part before examination routinely destroys the answer. If a component has failed and you may want it examined, bag it dry and leave it alone.
Sending a component
Please contact us before dispatching anything so that we can confirm receipt arrangements. Fracture surfaces should be protected from contact and from moisture; a rigid box with the fracture faces isolated is preferable to wrapping.
